I started graduate school in the Fall. I am a PhD student in Computer Science. My undergraduate background is in Computer Science and Philosophy.
One of the best sounding pieces of advice I ever received in relation to graduate school is to keep a journal. Each day that I do any work, I should write in it how much work I did, what (if anything) I read, and how much time I invest in such. I am going to initially keep this both electronically, in the form of this LiveJournal account, and physically.
I'm also going to keep track of recipes here. I cook frequently, and when I try new things, I might place recipes here. I love the idea of being able to remind myself about great dishes from months back. I am often surprised that more computer scientists don't cook; it is just following an algorithm.
If this turns out to be a bad idea, I could always just use the physical journal. I tend to not be the type to trust a machine to do something that I can do just as well without a machine. On the other hand, the idea of being able to search through just the papers I read, and keep my own summaries with them, is too tempting - and would be too time consuming by hand.
If nothing else, though, it's nice to be able to use communities on LJ.
